How to Check Your Starbucks Card Balance
Four ways to check a Starbucks Card balance — and the one step that makes it the only card worth protecting.

Short answer: Check a Starbucks Card balance at starbucks.com/gift, in the Starbucks app, on any till receipt, or by calling 1-800-STARBUC. The important bit: register the card and Starbucks protects the balance from the moment you report it lost — almost no other retailer does this.

What you need before you start
Every balance-check method except the in-store one asks for two things. Both are printed on the card itself — on the back of a physical card, or in the email for an eGift Card.
Method 3: Check online (fastest)
- Go to starbucks.com/gift.
- Enter the card number and the security code from the back.
- Your balance appears — and you can reload the card from the same page.
- While you are there, register the card to your Starbucks account. This is the step that protects the balance.
Registering takes about a minute and is the single most valuable thing on this page. Starbucks states that a registered card’s balance is protected from the time you notify them it is lost.

Method 2: Check by phone
The automated line reads your balance back to you.
Method 4: Check in a Starbucks store
Any barista can check it at the till — and the remaining balance is printed on your receipt after every purchase, so you rarely need to ask.

The Starbucks app shows the balance of every card added to your account, handles reloads, and can turn on automatic reload when the balance drops below a threshold you set.
Starbucks gift card rules worth knowing
Most guides stop at the balance check. These are the terms that actually catch people out.

- None. Starbucks states the card has no expiration date and the value never expires.
- Fees
- None. Starbucks states it charges no activation, service, dormancy or inactivity fees.
- Lost or stolen
- Protected — but only if registered. The balance is protected from the time you report it, online or on 1-800-STARBUC.
- Reloading
- Yes. In store, at starbucks.com/gift, by phone, or automatically through your Starbucks account.
- Where it works
- Most Starbucks stores across North America including Puerto Rico. Also Canada, the UK, Ireland, Mexico and Australia.
- Where it may not
- Some airport, grocery and bookstore locations, and stores in Guam, have limited acceptance.
- Reloads are final
- Starbucks states that once value is loaded, the transaction cannot be reversed.
The lost-card protection is genuinely unusual. Sephora, Nordstrom and Ulta all decline to replace a stolen balance outright. Starbucks will — if you registered the card first.
Avoid fake balance-check sites
A card number plus its PIN is everything needed to spend the card. There is no password, no account, no verification step. Anyone who collects those two fields can drain the balance in minutes, and because a stolen balance is not replaced, the money is simply gone.
Search results for gift card balance queries are full of look-alike pages that host their own entry form. A legitimate guide — this one included — sends you to the retailer's own site to type those digits. If a page asks you to enter the number and PIN on that page, close it.
