How to Check an Amex Gift Card Balance
The Amex gift card has the most generous lost-card policy of any card we have looked at — and it does not ask for the receipt.

What you need before you start
Every balance-check method except the in-store one asks for two things. Both are printed on the card itself — on the back of a physical card, or in the email for an eGift Card.
Method 2: Check online (fastest)
- Go to americanexpress.com/mygiftcard.
- Enter the 15-digit card number.
- Enter the 4-digit card identification number printed on the front, and the 3-digit security code on the back.
- The balance and full transaction history appear together — Amex shows pending authorisations as well as settled payments.
Because Amex shows pending authorisations, a balance can look lower than you expect straight after a hotel or petrol station hold. That amount usually releases within a few days.

The automated line reads your balance back to you.
Method 3: Check in a American Express store
No retailer can look up an Amex gift card balance — it is not a store card. Use the website or the phone line.
American Express gift card rules worth knowing
Most guides stop at the balance check. These are the terms that actually catch people out.

- American Express states the funds on the gift card do not expire.
- Fees
- American Express states the card has no fees after purchase.
- Lost or stolen
- Replaced. If funds remain when you report it, Amex cancels the card and sends a replacement for that amount. It will not refund anything spent before you reported it.
- What you need to report it
- The card number, the 3-digit security code from the back and the 4-digit card identification number from the front. No receipt is required.
- Replacement fee
- None is stated in the Amex gift card terms.
- Where they work
- Anywhere in the US that takes American Express — which is a narrower list than Visa or Mastercard, so check before relying on it.
Amex is the exception among the cards on this site: no receipt, no registration, and the remaining balance comes back. It is worth photographing the card so you have those three numbers if it goes missing.
Avoid fake balance-check sites
A card number plus its PIN is everything needed to spend the card. There is no password, no account, no verification step. Anyone who collects those two fields can drain the balance in minutes, and because a stolen balance is not replaced, the money is simply gone.
Search results for gift card balance queries are full of look-alike pages that host their own entry form. A legitimate guide — this one included — sends you to the retailer's own site to type those digits. If a page asks you to enter the number and PIN on that page, close it.
Frequently asked questions
Does Amex replace a lost gift card?
Yes, for whatever balance remains at the moment you report it. Anything already spent by someone else is not refunded, so report it as soon as you notice.
Do I need the receipt to replace an Amex gift card?
No. Amex asks for the card number and the two codes printed on the card, not proof of purchase — which is unusual, and better for you than most retailer cards.
Do Amex gift cards expire?
American Express states the funds do not expire.
Why was my Amex gift card declined?
Either the shop does not take American Express, or the balance does not cover the whole transaction. Prepaid cards cannot part-pay unless the cashier splits the bill.
Can I use an Amex gift card online?
Yes. If asked for a billing address, use your own. Some sites will not accept prepaid cards for subscriptions or recurring payments.
Can I get cash from an Amex gift card?
No. Amex gift cards cannot be used at ATMs or for cash back.
